I realize that higher capacity optical media formats are announced all the time. Most never make it to market. This is just crazy though. A company called Mempile has developed a new technology that will allow 1 terabyte or 1,000 gigabytes of data to be stored on a disc that is not much larger than a standard DVD. Once the jump to blue lasers is made, the company claims that up to 5 terabytes can be stored on a single disc.
This kind of capacity on a single disc would allow an entire season of a television show to fit on a single disc. Manufacturing wise this would be a real cost cutter for the studios. I think from a consumer standpoint however, this would be a disaster. The HD-DVD/BluRay battle is already giving people bad memories of past format wars. The last thing to do is drop yet another format on the public.
The company is already stating that they won’t be ready to go to market for another 2 or 3 years. By that time I am hopeful things will have settled a bit with the current format war. This is a technology that might be left to the data backup market.
