The DVD Forum

The DVD Forum is a committee of sorts that helps to govern the direction of the technology.  It is basically a collection (around 220 to be exact) of companies that meet from time to time to discuss the latest advancements as well as define the specification and “rules” of the technology.  The company that I work for is part of it and we have sent people from this very office to participate.  I mention this now because it just so happens their European conference will be taking place on September 3rd in Berlin Germany.

As I look over their agenda on the website, I can’t help but notice that everything has to do with HD-DVD and there isn’t even a mention of standard definition DVD.  One thing to note is that as far as a technology goes, regular DVD is about as advanced as it’s going to get.  There isn’t much new you can add to it.  It has been maturing for over 10 years and now it’s just a matter of flooding the market with content.  That isn’t to say there isn’t value in standard def anymore, but rather there isn’t really anything new to present at a conference such as this.

I am going to go ahead an add a link to the DVD Forum website to the Useful Information section.  If anyone is interested in learning the ins and outs of DVD and HD-DVD, I am sure there is a white paper for it on this site.  It’s really a great resource for the interested.
