The animation wing of Sony Pictures is going to be entering the direct to DVD market with Open Season 2. What is interesting about this deal is that it comes on the heels of Disney’s abandoning this distribution method which they themselves created.

Sony will offset costs for this endeavor by offloading the work to smaller authoring houses in New Mexico and India.

When a studio decides to go direct to DVD with a title, it is a pretty good indication of the quality of that title. For instance, I can remember working on Carlito’s Way Rise to Power a few years ago. A direct to DVD prequel to the awesome movie Carlito’s Way. Rise to Power was terrible beyond words.
