The negativity flows from my fingers

Wow.  I have been reading over my last few entries and my negativity has been growing by leaps and bounds.  I think it’s time I addressed where that is coming from.  I’m really not as negative as I may seem.  Read on.

If you notice, all of my negativity is directed toward one thing.  Physical media.  This isn’t to say I hate DVD.  I really don’t.  In fact, I love it.  No single technology has entertained me more over the last 10 years.  I also think that DVD is one of the greatest home entertainment advances ever.

I think a lot of this stems from Mp3’s.  Yes.  Music and audio.  I haven’t used a CD in…well…I can’t tell you when.  Probably since I purchased my first Ipod some 4 or 5 years ago.  All of a sudden I was free.  I don’t have a ton of CD’s cluttering my house.  I could rip what I own…and toss the media.  Don’t worry, I back up.  I can grab music on the fly from various sources.  It goes with me in my car.  It goes with me into my office.  I learn things from podcasts.  I listen on a plane when I travel.  Heck I even listen when I fall asleep at night sometimes.  It has without a doubt changed my view of things in a lot of ways.

The simple fact is, I can’t get excited about new optical media formats.  Whatever they are.  You know what would make me excited?  Turning on my home appliance and having access to thousands of movies, high def, with menus, with extra content that I can watch whenever I want for a small fee.  With nothing to store.  Nothing to dust.  Nothing to wear out or get damaged.  Just beautiful content.  When and where I want it.

Maybe, oh just maybe, I could even dump it to a portable media device and take it with me.  Now I am just talking crazy.  Sigh.

I was reading in the latest Entertainment Weekly that the networks are fighting for online eyeballs.  Yep.  That is where the future is.  They are starting to understand.  I am hopeful that it will continue.

So let me rant about things like Qflix and the stupidity of it all.  I think it’s fun.  Blog all these crazy ideas.  These desperate attempts to squeeze just one little slice out of a very small pie.  In reality my rants aren’t negative.  They are more of a thumbing of the nose at outdated technology.  Maybe I just get it.  I just get where the real money is.  I hope you do to.

I do, in spite of the fact that I work in a library. Heck, because I work in a library I understand the need to keep adopting new technologies, not only to keep our patrons happy but to keep pace with what’s being developed and what’s being made available.
While I’m wary of the idea of pitching our print collection, I like the idea of using it as a back-up and much stuff as possible available to our patrons through their iPods or other devices.
